Obama Lies and Unconstitutional Acts to Become the Legacy of his Presidency

by Jayne D. Frank

For some Americans, President Obama’s approval ratings remain high and that is stunning! But take into consideration who this small minority is who approves of him. They are students in school, too preoccupied with trying to get ahead and enjoying their young lives that they don’t pay attention. These are people who benefit from one of the largest Federal welfare giveaways in this century-those people collecting food stamps, unemployment benefits, disability and free Medicaid health services. This segment of America is so dependent on their status quo that they won’t open their eyes to see what this man is doing to our Country because they “can’t” lose the money they are given.

Lies from the White House about Obamacare permeated 2013 and will explode in 2014, because Obama has no other choice. Obamacare is a failure and a disaster. Already with this health care law, we know what is not true:

1) President Obama says “If you like your plan you can keep it.” This Administration knew just 2 months after the bill was passed when Regulations were written, that some 10 million people were targeted to lose their health care plans because the plans did not cover services that people did not need. Contraceptives, maternity care and abortive services were certainly not desired by single men in this country. High deductibles and co-pays were not in most plans because middle class Americans just don’t have that kind of money. Many Americans also just chose NOT to carry insurance and as people in a supposedly free country that was their right. So, thus far, 5.9 million Americans have been told they have lost their plans.

2) Another lie: “If you like your doctor, you can keep him!” We learned after October that many plans offered by the healthcare exchanges will NOT include your current doctor or hospital in their network plans. If you have a serious chronic disease and have been receiving great care by your doctor or hospital, you will once again be faced with starting over and finding someone to treat you with the same care and medications. Many cancer patients whose only hope is to go to Sloan-Kettering, MD Anderson or other major hospitals for treatment and a possible cure, will be shut out of access to those hospitals.

3) We are finding out that many plans in the Government health care exchanges are not offering the kinds of medicines that have treated your illnesses with success. If you have struggled to get your asthma under control and have found “management” of the disease by some of the more expensive medications such as Advair, these medications will undoubtedly be replaced by less-effective cheaper medications. Women who count on expensive osteoporosis medications to stop or prevent the disease will find that those too will found to be too expensive. Cancer medications are already being talked about to be reduced under these plans.

4) We have heard that the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) which is the governing body that will decide what treatments you get as a patient, will consist of non-elected, mostly non medical people who will not be accountable to anyone for their decisions. It is no accident that the members of IPAB are not and will not be chosen until this law is well underway and is unchangeable. The example given above for decisions about cancer treatment is more than enough for a reasonable person to know what is coming. A better example would be treatments for prostate cancer in men being severely rationed. Statistics indicate that 30% of men over age 50 and 80% of men over age 70 will be diagnosed with the disease. PSA, coupled with other tests, are the only current early indicators of prostate cancer. Treatments include radical surgery, radiation, hormone therapy and “watchful waiting.” The documented most effective cures are the first two and are costly treatments for the disease. IPAB’s mission to reduce costs will surely include rationing of treatments for any male over age 65. This action could become an unnecessary death sentence for those males with the disease. This cost-reduction mission of IPAB is certainly applicable to all other diseases where there are multiple treatments available such as breast cancer. Proponents of this law will always say that IPAB cannot “ration,” but there is no other way to achieve cost savings than to limit tests and procedures that are the most expensive for early diagnosis.

5) Obama and his minions have continued to lie that Obamacare will not affect seniors. Seniors have already been told that their doctors no longer will accept Medicare Advantage, and seniors will be the #1 target for this new IPAB group as they selectively decide, based on your age, whether you qualify for expensive medical treatment. Many seniors have also been told by their doctors that their doctors are not going to practice anymore or that they will no longer accept Medicare patients. Throwing every senior into Medicaid isn’t the answer either as most doctors in high density senior areas of the country have already stopped accepting Medicaid patients.

6) The lie continues about greater access for all Americans to medical care. Taking into consideration the number of doctors that are dropping out of private practice and the millions of new enrollees to the Government health care system that this law envisions, there is no way you will be able to see your doctor or receive a medical procedure without waiting many weeks or months.

7) In a stagnant economy with no meaningful jobs on the horizon, the worst lie told by Obama is that Government-run health care will be cheaper, “saving families $2500 per year!” Over the past 2 months we have heard the horror stories of middle class people who have gone on the exchanges to find plans only to find out that their premiums can be increased sometimes by triple their current cost, but if they pick a lower cost plan, their deductibles and co-pays are exorbitant and UNAFFORDABLE. Add to this fact that the payment for the website alone has gone from $634 billion to $677 billion and consider the millions of Americans who either are getting substantial unqualified subsidies or who have been shifted from a “payor” to a Medicaid recipient. There is no way this Government-run system will be cheaper and will save taxpayers money.

If this President cared about this Country at all, he would admit the lies he tells and at least try to get Obamacare changed in the parts where it has been found to be failing. Instead, he illegally waives his hand and mandates that certain groups be exempted from the law, makes regulations that extend much of the more onerous portions until they figure it out, or he just plain “deems” certain sections of the law unnecessary or no longer in effect.

Americans, this is OUR country, not Barack Obama’s! We are going to find that 2014 and 2015 may become the worst years of our lives because many millions of people with corporate-sponsored plans will lose their coverage and many of the mandates in the law have yet to become effective. We can do better. America had the best health care system in the world, and instead of fixing the small areas that needed to be fixed such as the uninsured or the rising cost of healthcare, Obama just blew up our health care, for his own agenda. I firmly believe we haven’t done anything about Barack Obama’s illegal actions in the Congress because of the “racist” charges to anyone who disagrees with the Obama administration. We have one more chance to right the wrongs that we allowed to happen. That is the 2014 mid-term elections. If we do not put responsible people in the Senate and keep the House of Representatives, we will deserve what we get! Only with control of these two houses can responsible Republican members of Congress take actions to repeal and replace this disastrous law.

Update: What You Need to Know About Your Annual Medicare Wellness Exam

by Jayne D. Frank

As a person that routinely has had an annual physical since my 40s, I was horrified last year (in my 2nd year of Medicare) about how that visit with my doctor had changed in accordance with the pending Obamacare implementation. Please read my previous post “Obamacare’s Free Yearly Exam.”

This year, everything we have been warned about regarding Obamacare, Medicare and the new standards imposed upon our personal doctors has been confirmed and every senior citizen must make themselves aware of the new notion that everything you say, everything you do, and who you are, will be documented in your personal record and shared with the Government through CMS (Medicare). Also, record input by your doctor is probably being done through Wolters Kluwers Up to Date Website, based in Copenhagen, which centralizes the reporting to CMS. Please stay with me on this article as I relate my experience to help you understand what I learned after returning from my doctor’s office yesterday.

Upon arriving at the office, I was given a slew of paperwork (even though it had been updated earlier that year), and among that paperwork was a document asking about my state of depression, amount of times I am depressed, whether I am ambulatory or need help with any functions, etc. Since the personal visit is where I would ONLY discuss any possible depression with my doctor, I refused to fill out this form. When the doctor’s assistant saw that I left this form blank (taking up 10 minutes of my allocated time with my doctor), I informed her that it was “none of the government’s business” and she didn’t pursue it. Then before the doctor could see me, I was given a bunch of preprinted paperwork on asthma (although mine had been controlled for years), and Preventative Plans for Women.

Then it was time for the remainder of my allocated time with my doctor. He came in, went over the “filled out forms,” and only through personal questions to him could I get him off the “script.” My “fully clothed” physical came next and then I was dismissed. Once again, how on earth can a doctor see the signs of more serious problems (i.e., skin lesions, skin color changes, water on the legs, lumps, etc. if he does not personally exam your body?

I consider myself to be very informed as to the implications of Obamacare on all of us and especially those mandates and regulations for senior citizens. Knowing all of that, I was still not knowledgeable on what I was to find out through my research today. Keep remembering Obama’s phrase “If you like your doctor you can keep him.” I found and read the entire PDF document by the CMS (Medicare) which in a nutshell mandates that if doctors want to keep treating Medicare patients, they must adhere to a number of core rules and mandates regarding inputting your personal medical records into a database which will eventually be reviewed and “scored” by CMS. Why? So that our doctors and providers (including dentists, podiatrists and chiropractors) can “rat on us” to get $44,000 from the Government over a five-year period, just for our privilege of seeing him. There are actual benchmarks and information the doctor must input in order to “qualify” for this incentive. Information such as your race, ethnicity, and other demographic information. If the doctor does not follow these Government regulations on electronic records and reporting, he will not qualify for this incentive and his regular Medicare allowance will shrink by up to 5%.

Get the picture? It’s at the same time NOT about you and your health anymore, AND it’s ALL about you and your health. There will be assessments done and reported on any asthma you have, any depression you have, weight, and of course smoking. It is not how you and your doctor can better improve your particular health situation. So in the end you leave the doctor’s office feeling “used,” not by the doctor but by your Government. By the way, had I not had 6 questions on my iPhone in front of the doctor insisting on these individual answers, I am sure I could not have gotten those answers because of the time he has to spend on the computer during my presence.

Some senior citizens know what is going on and where this is leading; others are in denial or refuse to take heed and do something about it. I for one am going to fight tooth and nail to see what can be done by Congress to “defund Obamacare,” or to dismantle this program bit by bit. I owe this to our children and to myself.

It seems that the $750 billion reduction to Medicare under Obamacare could be avoided if these intrusive standards and the cost of massive data collection centers were eliminated instead of sucking the life-blood from Medicare and ultimately the care provided to seniors.

Seniors and Millenials Voting for Obama – Don’t You Get It, or Are You Just Stupid!

by Jayne D. Frank

Apparently everyone in this country except you seniors and millenials voting for Obama’s re-election recognize the Democrat lies and distortions of this year’s election, and perhaps the only thing that will make you wake up is the truth (unless you can’t handle the truth).

  • Barack Obama has NOT protected Medicare like AARP has lied to you about.  Medicare Advantage is going to be terminated which is the system that many seniors have.  The reason?  Obamacare cuts what AARP and many other companies providing Medicare Advantage get from the Government.  The result will be that you are either thrown out of the current plan you are in so that you can pay more for a Medigap policy, OR you will be thrown into a pool of people covered by “Big Brother.””  Is this what you worked so hard for all these years – to be lied to be your Government and your insurer?  AARP is only in this fight because if you use your head instead of your emotions, you will see that they stand to lose a lot of money from your current participation in their plan.  Obama raided Medicare at the tune of $716 billion to put that money into Obamacare so that the people he wants covered, get covered.  Believe me, that’s not seniors because in his own words (to paraphrase) seniors and babies are not productive to society!  That money taken from Medicare will result in bureaucrats telling you what care you MAY receive and paying your doctor less so that eventually he can’t care for you.  Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are the ONLY ones which will allow you to keep the Medicare that you have in place now but will change it for your children and grandchildren so that they have Medicare when they get older.  Obamacare will cost another $1.6 trillion more than the trillions that were originally anticipated to cover the amount of Americans (and illegal immigrants) who Obama promised to cover.  Are you really so selfish that you won’t use rational thinking and protect future generations?  Only repeal and replacement of Obamacare will preserve the current coverage of seniors already in the system. Seniors are NOT getting their familiar annual physicals free — this is a lie (see my Annual Physical articles).
  • Barack Obama’s agenda is to have the Government CONTROL the internet, including YouTube videos and social media content.  Recent legislation for this failed in the House of Representatives, but Obama is going to circumvent Congress and the rights of Americans by issuing an Executive Order taking away your internet privacy rights.  His ultimate goal is for State control of all media and he currently has this Executive Order being finalized using the recent idiotic Innocence of Muslims trailer.  Millenials, your future is just about set in stone.  You will not be able put videos online that you want; you will not be able to look at whatever YouTube videos interest you, and you will be watched by the Government for anything on social media that does not agree with the positions espoused by the Democrats.  Say Goodbye to the status quo.
  • The Obama Administration wants to control what Americans see on television and hear on the radio, often proposing that the Fairness Doctrine be imposed.  This would mean that the Government alone would have the right to take off the air whatever they felt did not agree with their draconian positions and could impose mandated television programs for Americans.  It is the case in many third-world countries and is not very far away.  Only our Republican House and the calls of furious Americans have stopped legislation in Congress to impose this.
  • Teenagers and Millenials – do you think your phone will be exempt from the above Government mandates in the future  – it certainly will not and the Government will move in to monitor who is called and the conversation of your call.
  • Both seniors and millenials are already the victims of Obama’s policies not to protect and promote our natural resources of oil and coal in this Country.  This Administration would rather see themselves as globalists giving offshore contracts and business to other countries and shutting down any possibility of our own energy independence.  Can you afford to keep chosing whether to eat or put gas in your car?  Remember Obama’s administration said that gas “should” go up to $10/gallon in order to further their agenda. This is the decision you will continue to be faced with if you re-elect Barack Obama.
  • Do you want Government telling you what kind of car you must drive, what kind of house you will be able to afford or whether you can only get a good job if you belong to a union?  That is where we find ourselves in 2012 and President Obama’s redistribution agenda will make sure that your opportunities are stopped or limited until the poorest in our Country are raised to “your standard of living” without their having  had to work for it.
  • Do you like meeting your friends for beer and a pizza, taking your children to McDonald’s for a Happy Meal or gathering around the TV for a sports event with all the makings for a great night – popcorn, chili, hamburgers, dip, cheeses, etc.  Think about the good times you have had with your friends because once the Obama Administration’s “food agenda” is in full force you will not be able to eat what you want.  Mrs. Obama has already interfered with your loss of freedom by depriving families of the choice of what their children will eat at school, taking sugar out of products or limiting the amount you can buy.  All this under the guise of “knowing what is good for your family.”

I personally will vote to retain my freedom as protected and assured by my American Constitution and Declaration of Independence and I will vote to allow Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to get us back on an “American Way of Life.”  Should this fail,  I can only pray for the America I love and know and this will be just the beginning of what Barack Obama has described as “his flexibility in his second term (to get done what he wants).” He ignores the rule of law, ignores the Constitution and won’t work with our Legislative Branch of Government (both Democrats and Republicans).

I implore seniors, new voters, Millenials and all previous supporters of Barack Obama to look beyond themselves and their needs.  This an America of more than 300 million people, 69 million of whom are senior citizens (your parents and grandparents) and those just trying to enter the workforce and whose parents have described the “American Dream” to them.  This is THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION in my lifetime, and I have been through many decades of Presidential elections.  Do the right thing and pull the lever for America’s future on November 6.

Voters Should be Outraged!

This is a reprint of a New York Times Article 4/23/2012 about a taxpayer slush fund set up to deceive voters:

Call it President Obama’s Committee for the Re-Election of the President — a political slush fund at the Health and Human Services Department.

Only this isn’t some little fund from shadowy private sources; this is taxpayer money, redirected to help Obama win another term. A massive amount of it, too — $8.3 billion. Yes, that’s billion, with a B.

Here is how it works.

The most oppressive aspects of the ObamaCare law don’t kick in until after the 2012 election, when the president will no longer be answerable to voters. More “flexibility,” he recently explained to the Russians.

Postponing the pain: The administration is temporarily restoring funds to Medicare Advantage so seniors don’t lose coverage before the election.

GETTY
Postponing the pain: The administration is temporarily restoring funds to Medicare Advantage so seniors don’t lose coverage before the election.

But certain voters would surely notice one highly painful part of the law before then — namely, the way it guts the popular Medicare Advantage program.

For years, 12 million seniors have relied on these policies, a more market-oriented alternative to traditional Medicare, without the aggravating gaps in coverage.

But as part of its hundreds of billions in Medicare cuts, the Obama one-size-fits-all plan slashes reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage starting next year — herding many seniors back into the government-run program.

Under federal “open-enrollment” guidelines, seniors must pick their Medicare coverage program for next year by the end of this year — which means they should be finding out before Election Day.

Nothing is more politically volatile than monkeying with the health insurance of seniors, who aren’t too keen on confusing upheavals in their health care and are the most diligent voters in the land. This could make the Tea Party look like a tea party.

Making matters even more politically dangerous for Obama is that open enrollment begins Oct. 15, less than three weeks before voters go to the polls.

It’s hard to imagine a bigger electoral disaster for a president than seniors in crucial states like Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio discovering that he’s taken away their beloved Medicare Advantage just weeks before an election.

This political ticking time bomb could become the biggest “October Surprise” in US political history.

But the administration’s devised a way to postpone the pain one more year, getting Obama past his last election; it plans to spend $8 billion to temporarily restore Medicare Advantage funds so that seniors in key markets don’t lose their trusted insurance program in the middle of Obama’s re-election bid.

The money is to come from funds that Health and Human Services is allowed to use for “demonstration projects.” But to make it legal, HHS has to pretend that it’s doing an “experiment” to study the effect of this money on the insurance market.

That is, to “study” what happens when the government doesn’t change anything but merely continues a program that’s been going on for years.

Obama can temporarily prop up Medicare Advantage long enough to get re-elected by exploiting an obscure bit of federal law. Under a 1967 statute, the HHS secretary can spend money without specific approval by Congress on “experiments” directly aimed at “increasing the efficiency and economy of health services.”

Past demonstration projects have studied new medical techniques or strategies aimed at improving care or reducing costs. The point is to find ways to lower the costs of Medicare by allowing medical technocrats to make efficient decisions without interference from vested interests.

Now Obama means to turn it on its head — diverting the money to a blatantly nonexperimental purpose to serve his political needs.

A Government Accounting Office report released this morning shows, quite starkly, that there simply is no experiment being conducted, just money being spent. Understandably, the GAO recommends that HHS cancel the project.

Congress should immediately launch an investigation into this unprecedented misuse of taxpayer money and violation of the public trust, which certainly presses the boundaries of legality and very well may breach them.

If he’s not stopped, Obama will spend $8 billion in taxpayer funds for a scheme to mask the debilitating effects on seniors of his signature piece of legislation just long enough to get himself re-elected.

Now that is some serious audacity.

Anger in America

by Richard H. Frank

Everywhere we look today there is an intensifying anger among the People that is taking different forms of expression across this nation and around the world.  Whether it is the Tea Party or similar Patriots movements, or the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators, the signs of unrest with our capitalistic and government institutions which today are intricately connected, dissatisfaction abounds.

The anger being expressed crosses all social, economic and racial demographics of American society. Our senior citizens are angry having witnessed their life savings literally wiped out as a result of the collapse of the financial system and the real estate markets in 2008.  They foresee no chance of recovery for their hard-earned investments and savings in their remaining lifetime.  The Government takeover of General Motors and Chrysler and the forced bankruptcy by the Government left thousands of retirees holding worthless shares of stock in companies they spent decades working for and making profitable. These same seniors who paid their fair share into Social Security and Medicare now see the reality that Government has spent $2.5 trillion from the fabled “Trust Fund Lock Box” leaving a stack of IOUs as the promise to pay retiree benefits.  Likewise, Medicare as the safety net for seniors is hurtling into the abyss and insolvency.  The result being seen by seniors is increased premiums that must come from their already stretched fixed incomes coupled with rationing of services provided.  Without a doubt, should Obamacare be found Constitutional, seniors will bear the lion’s share of cost and service reductions.  It is not difficult to understand the anger boiling up within the community of senior citizens in America.

The second group of angry Americans is composed of the working middle-class that is charged now and in the future to pay for the misguided and often corrupt decisions of our Federal Government.  This group sees the future as being hopeless.  They know that they must bear the burden of paying through taxes for all of the unsustainable promises made by politicians over the past Century.  They look at the $14 trillion National Debt and are aware that there is no chance to pay that burden under the best economic conditions they can imagine within their lifetime.  Moreover, with unemployment in this nation standing at 9-10% and under-employment approaching 20% these Americans see their task as hopeless.  Thus, anger abounds within the ranks of those Americans that are producers in the Nation.

Then there is the most insidious group of Americans.  These are the takers addicted to the entitlement mentality promoted by every Liberal Progressive politician in America.  They see the capitalistic system as unfair, fraught with fraud and greed and taking from the masses in favor of the richest 1% in America.  This group poses the greatest threat to the Representative Republic than does any threat from an outside nation or political movement.  They would punish success demanding redistribution of the national wealth without regard to the unintended consequences such an action would generate.

Their tactics are those of mob rule that our Forefathers warned against when creating our Constitution. Their message is divisive and preaches class warfare and tyranny as an end result.  They are angry but direct their anger against the wrong institutions in our capitalistic society.

The 21st Century is not the first time in the history of America that we as a People have faced such a growing anger.  It is, however, the first time that I can remember that our President and Congress have been so bitterly divided in finding solutions to fix the ills of our nation.

Barack Obama and the Democrats in the Senate have formed an unwritten alliance to stop any legislative action proposed to return to the limits on Government enumerated in our  Constitution and are using parliamentary procedures and Executive Orders as tools to promote their socialist Agenda.

I recommend that every reader of this blog view a short nine minute video of a cartoon message from 1948 entitled “Make Mine Freedom.”  The link on another blog that features this video is  http://nationaljuggernaut.blogspot.com/2009/09/this-cartoon-seemed-far-fetched-in-1948.html. After viewing this sort video I think you will see the connection to our situation today and the peril we face as a nation from the policies and ideologies put forward by Barack Obama  and his administration.

The only hope for America is to make our voices heard in the 2012 General Election and replace Barack Obama, and every Congressman or Senator that ascribes to principles contrary to those contained in our Constitution.

Obama’s Campaign Strategy – The Blame game!

By: Richard H. Frank

The Obama Administration’s policies having proven to be classic failures, the President must switch to the old stand-by tactic of blaming everyone else, including his own party for failing to support his agenda. His position will not focus on how the Democratic-controlled Congress is responsible for creating a $5.2 trillion deficit between 2007 and 2010 and that his stimulus program to spend $787 billion followed by another proposed $447 billion has nothing to do with the increased deficit. His continued lies to the American public that his latest proposals are fully paid for are wearing thin with the very people who elected him to office. He continues to demagogue the Republican- controlled House of Representatives as caring only for the rich that do not pay their fair share of taxes and how he will not place the burden of the economic dilemma on the backs of the middle class and senior citizens.

His contention that he will veto any legislation that does not include new revenues from the richest Americans in the form of higher taxes is in direct opposition to his pledge not to raise taxes on the middle class in America. Likewise his “Grand Bargain” which he personally blames Speaker Boehner for rejecting lacks any detail as to how he will cut spending by $2 for every $1 of new revenue generated through closing tax loop holes and tax increases on the rich.

What is even more astonishing is that he expects the public to sign on to the class warfare he creates by stating that Warren Buffet pays a lower tax rate than does his secretary. He fails to acknowledge the fact that Buffet’s tax rate is from capital gains that are taxed at 15% while his secretary who allegedly earns $50,000 per year is taxed on income at the rate of approximately 25%. “Just math” he says as he stands and proclaims supposed facts before the American public. Notwithstanding the fact that Mr Buffet has already paid income tax on the money he invested when he first earned it, lets examine the math. If Mr. Buffet’s secretary paid 25% on her $50,000 salary she would pay the government approximately $12,000. If Mr. Buffet on the other hand achieved $50 million as the President contends, he would have paid $7, 500,000 in taxes not to mention the hundreds, or possibly thousands, of jobs his investment has created and sustained. This is the math Mr. President. I wish you could prove the same for the $787 billion in wasted stimulus dollars you spent.

As the campaign takes shape we hear the old refrain of blaming Bush for the economic woes of the country. Two wars unpaid for, a prescription drug program unpaid for and tax cuts for the rich that crippled the flow of revenue to the Federal Government.  Now his claim is that stimulus was not enough and we need to spend more money that we do not have to fix the economy coupled with taxing those greedy rich people and companies that do not pay their fair share. He knows full well that Congress will not pass his latest attempt at redistribution of wealth in the form of “The Americans Jobs Act” which he insists must be passed immediately. Even the Senate leader Harry Reid will not bring the bill to the floor until some time in October if even then. This is all in the plan for placing the President above the fray and blaming Congress for his failures as he deflects any responsibility from himself to others for failures of his policies and ideological agenda.

He insists that Washington must live within its means and in order to do so must reform the tax code, Medicare and Medicaid; this from a party that has failed to pass a budget for the last two years.   He continues to scare senior citizens with cuts to their benefits many of which are hidden in his signature legislation aptly dubbed “Obamacare.” Just wait until the increases in premiums kicks in for seniors that subscribe to their part “B” benefits. These increases will be more than offset by cost of living increases forecast in the near future. Lastly, he stated that the government should ask all companies that received bailout money from the government to repay their debt. I thought this was explicit in the original bailout agreements. Just how much is still owed by these large companies to the American taxpayers?

But then again I guess the American taxpayers should just bend over and grab our ankles and kiss the money we “invested” in the New General Motors, Chrysler and solar companies like Solyndra good-bye.

To quote Barack Obama, his speeches have all become “words just words” and can fall into the category of more campaign rhetoric called the “Blame Game”.

The Insidious Creeping Threat to Senior Citizens

By: Richard H. Frank

There are about 50 million Americans, or about 16% of our population receiving Social Security benefits today many of whom have retired in the past ten years. Their dream for independent living during what was to be their “Golden Years” has turned out to be just a dream. More than 64% of those retired persons depend upon Social Security as their only means of income upon which to provide for themselves and their families and some of those could have done better except for the fact that they lost most of their savings in the last stock market downturn.

The majority of these individuals paid into the system their entire working life and are now faced with living within the limits of their fixed income. The last cost-of-living increase seen by these individuals came in their 2009 benefit increase and amounted to 5.8% largely due to sky rocketing oil and food price experienced the prior year.  This resulted in establishing a CPI benchmark cap of 215.495 before any future increases would be granted. Additionally, the calculation for the CPI was changed to exclude the costs of energy and food from the calculation as these were considered too volatile and short-lived to accurately forecast the rate of inflation and thus a true estimate for the “cost-of-living index.”

So just what has occurred between 2005 and 2010 with regard to the impact of food and energy upon the CPI (consumer price index)?  The answer is that the buying power of the fixed income dollar for those people receiving social security has decreased by 52%.  The very items excluded from calculations for cost of living are those that impact the day-to-day existence of our senior citizens.  Consider the following increases between 2005 and 2010:

  • Food increased 65.23%
  • Oil increased 50.16%
  • Coal (energy) increased 168.77%

Energy costs which include power generation and impact food production and the associated distribution costs of all groups are a cancer that is slowly eroding the purchasing power of the dollar.  Yet we have a Government that has no coherent energy policy and does nothing to promote energy independence for America.  Instead, the politicians are content to impose drilling moratoriums and stop exploration for oil in favor of the imposition of onerous penalties such as cap and trade regulations in an effort to stop mythical greenhouse gas emissions.  Eventually, all of their actions and inactions are born by the individual in the form of higher costs for energy and goods produced with that energy.

The real rate of inflation including food and energy costs has exceeded the reported CPI for any year since 2008 and is being borne totally by the fixed income of those receiving social security.  Over the next 20 years the number of those persons eligible to receive benefits will increase by approximately 1% each year due largely to the baby boomers turning 65 years of age.  Unless the continuing trend of higher costs for energy and food is reversed or benefits indexed to include these higher costs, our senior citizen population will be relegated to living below the poverty level owing to unaccountable inflationary influences brought about by energy and food costs. Unless these realities are recognized we shall have created an underclass of aging citizens in America.

Inflation is the insidious creeping threat to every senior citizen in America today and is consuming upward to 10% of their fixed income each year, a situation which is unsustainable.
