October 16, 2013-Groundhog Day in Washington, D.C.

by Richard H. Frank

The politicians in Washington D.C., especially Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, are marking October 16, 2013 as a victory over Republicans in the House of Representatives with the passage of an extension to the CR and the debt limit extension until after the first of the year. In reality, the Senate Bill accomplished absolutely nothing and was a replay of the 2011 budget crisis. Just as in the movie “Groundhog Day” every American can prepare for a replay of the same old “crap” – just another day.

The only accomplishment of this legislation is to incur an additional $1 trillion of debt over the next 60 days for Obama to spend and redistribute as he deems appropriate.

I seem to remember his statements and vote against the debt limit increase in 2006 as such actions would be irresponsible and un-American. Now he has the audacity to proclaim that extending the debt limit does not increase our debt by a single dime. I wonder where he studied money and banking. Obviously not in the Wharton School of Economics. I also seem to remember he appointed the Simpson Bowles Commission to study and make recommendations on how to bring Government spending under control and eventually balance the Federal budget.

Because the Commission recommendations addressed entitlement reform, Obama immediately rejected the recommendations out of hand and for the past four years has ignored his own Commission’s findings.

Following the loss of control in the House by Democrats in the 2010 mid-term election, Obama’s solution to our economic woes was to appoint a Super Committee charged with solving the ongoing problems of continuing deficits and structuring a “grand bargain” that would raise revenues without reducing the current out of control spending.

To assure success of the Super Committee, Obama and his administration championed the creation of the “Budget Control Act” passed and signed into law in 2011 that contained a provision for across the board spending cuts in every branch of government known as the “Sequester.” When the Super Committee failed to reach agreement and eventually disbanded, Obama and his administration freaked out as sequester took over and they predicted Armageddon for the nation. Two years have passed and the spending reductions have been implemented without Armageddon taking place.

The government shutdown of 2013 began on October 1, 2013 with the furlough of some 700,000 non-essential government employees. If my math and understanding of the English language is correct, that means approximately one-third of the Federal Government is non-essential; then it seems to reason that one-third of the Federal budget should be scrutinized for elimination.

One-third of our current spending in a $3.2 trillion budget equates to $1 trillion in reductions that brings the Federal budget close to balancing. However, Congress would never consider addressing the obvious as some special interest might be put at risk when logic prevails over politics.

The real answer to the Government’s spending problem is to rid Congress of the professional politicians through strict term limits that would rid the Government of those who put personal advancement over doing the work and will of “We the People.”

Unfortunately, this would require that someone sponsor a Constitutional Amendment to achieve that end. This, along with a Balanced Budget Amendment, although talked about, are much like the mythical unicorn – beautiful to imagine but far from reality.

So following October 16, 2013, another groundhog day, our nation is taking a giant step along the path to becoming Greece.

May God have mercy on our children and grandchildren who are destined to bear the burden of debt thrust upon them by a Federal bureaucracy concerned only with their ideology and egos.

Should we fail to fundamentally alter the makeup of Congress in the 2014 mid-term and put a stop to the devastating regulation of our economy and redistribution ideology held by Barack Obama and his minions, he will have achieved his stated goal to “fundamentally change America” to become a European-style democracy and cease as a Representative Republic.

Detroit-Obama’s Blueprint to the Destruction of America

by Richard H. Frank

August 17, 2010 I wrote a post entitled “Detroit Laid Waste by Multiculturalism and Political Correctness” which chronicled the slow death of a once great city. Like thousands of others that experienced the pinnacle of a thriving city through WWII in the 1940s and the postwar boom of the 1950s and 60s, I weep at what has become of this once great city. Detroit now forced into bankruptcy by corrupt, municipal officials, misguided policies, political correctness and the stranglehold by unions on the throat of the city. Over a period of 60 years the population has dropped from over 2 million to an estimated 700,000 as citizens fled the onslaught of crime and decay overtaking the city.

This past month, June, 2013, I was personally shocked and sickened to see first-hand what had become of the once beautiful eastside neighborhood and in particular the house where I was born. That neighborhood and that home held memories that reflected a family having achieved the American Dream. Now it stands evidence to the more than 78,000 abandoned and burned-out shells of homes that once were the pride of a thriving city.

As I stated in my previous blog “In Detroit we reap what we have sown. First the attack on our educational system and the dumbing down of America, followed by unending welfare programs, well-intentioned but destructive, as we reward people for making no contribution to caring for themselves or their family. Next, continuing the unrelenting attack on the free enterprise system by Government with regulations and taxes that stifle economic growth.

Detroit is just the latest municipality to fall prey to the insidious elements contained in Barack Obama’s master plan to fundamentally change America. The time bomb continues clicking the minutes away as this nation proceeds along the path to destruction resulting from a $17 trillion debt which cannot be repaid and some estimated $68 trillion in unfunded entitlements promised to Americans by the Federal, State and Local Governments.

I fear this great nation will not survive to celebrate its 300th birthday should we continue along Obama’s road to destruction.

Why Romney Lost the 2012 Election

by Richard H. Frank

Five months following the 2012 Presidential election and the defeat of Mitt Romney by Barack Obama the pundits  from both parties have attempted to spin their message and place the blame on everything from one candidate having no message to the other having a superior ground game for getting out the vote.  There is an element of truth in every theory presented but I believe the real reason resides in the changing demographics in America experienced over the past 50 years.  The demographics not so much in terms of ethnic origin, race or economic status but the demographic of an individual’s collective life experience.

As our nation prepared to celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976, I had the occasion to view a video entitled “What You Are is Where You Were When” created by  and featuring Dr. Morris Massey, then an Associate Dean and Professor of Marketing at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

My first impression as I viewed the video was that I was watching a fast-talking used car salesman that resembled a flim-flam man or carnival Barker.  As I listened however, it become apparent that he had a lot of valuable information to convey in a relatively short span of time limited by the video itself.

His message was all about values  The values every human being possesses, where they were first introduced, what life forces imprinted them upon us and how they became part of our belief system.

According to Dr. Massey there are three major periods in each person’s life during which values are developed:

  1. The Imprint Period, up to age seven, when we are like sponges absorbing everything around us, accepting much as true, especially when it comes from our parents.
  2. The Modeling Period, between the ages of eight and thirteen where we tend to copy others, often our parents.  We may be impressed by religion or teachers.  Often times outside influences may take precedent over the values of our parents.
  3. The Socialization Period, between 13 and 21 when peer pressures largely influence our behavior and often are in conflict with values previously introduced by parents and teachers.  Other influences include media, and in today’s rapidly changing technology the largely uninformed social media.

If Dr. Massey’s theories are correct the country has been bombarded with secular-based values over the past 50 years, many of which are in direct opposition to those of people born in the first half of the 20th Century.  For example:

  • The distortion of our Constitution with regard to the separation of church and state (words which cannot be found in the document as written by the Founding Fathers.)
  • The role of the Federal Government taking precedent and usurping the power of the state – disregard of the Enumerated Powers within the Constitution.
  • Expansion of the welfare state to include redistribution of wealth, not through voluntary, charitable institutions or individuals, but by the fiat of Government.
  • A disregard for human life by advocates of abortion and a practice in this Country that makes the Holocaust pale due to the wanton disregard for the life of the unborn through millions of abortions performed in this Country.

Take a look at what has occurred in our public institutions of learning beginning in the 1960s.  Religion has been removed from the classroom and the very mention of God is no longer tolerated.  Music celebrating any form of religion is no longer included in the secular curriculum taught in our schools and holidays acknowledged for centuries under the law are now renamed for political correctness.

So how have we as a nation allowed all this change in our values to occur since the Declaration of Independence was written in 1776?  According to Dr. Massey any change in values must be preceded by a “Significant Emotional Event.”

Looking back over the past 100 years it is easy to mark the most “significant emotion events” and see how they impacted the value system of Americans living at that moment in time.

  • 1914 World War I and a call to America to protect and defend the principles upon which this Country was founded.  The significant event came with the sinking of the Lusitania Passenger Liner by the German “U” boats and the loss of American life.
  • 1929’s Black Friday crash of the stock market leading to the Great Depression.  Millions of Americans were out of work and lost their homes.  This significant event imprinted the value for  hard work and property on millions of Americans living through the Depression.
  • December 7, 1941 and the Japanese attack upon Pearl Harbor once again awakened the patriotic values of America to return to its core values and defend the world against Imperial Japan and facism in Europe.
  • November 22, 1963 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas and shook the nation to its very foundation.  Politically, our Government leaders embarked upon social justice programs such as the  Great Society,  the War on Poverty and others that nurtured a growing segment of society addicted to entitlements which cannot be sustained.
  • September 11, 2001, the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon shook America awake and focused the threat of Muslim extremists directly on our security here in the homeland.
  • November, 2008 the election of Barack Obama, the first Black President in this nation’s history that campaigned against many of the values that made our Country the most free, most prosperous nation in the history of the world.  His promise was to “fundamentally change America” through his actions for social justice to correct in his words “a fundamentally flawed U. S. Constitution.”  The significant emotion to elect a black man regardless of his lack of credentials and experience to hold the office, and the fear of being judged as being racist, overrode logic and common sense of the electorate.
  • November, 2012 Barack Obama is reelected with a campaign based solely upon the premise that he could not fix all the economic problems created by  George Bush in a mere 4 years and that General Motors was alive and Bin Laden was dead.

Therefore, if one is to believe that Dr. Massey is correct, and I do, what will the next “significant emotional event” be that awakes America and returns us to our senses?

Possibly without real fiscal reform the collapse of the dollar which would throw this Country into the worst depression ever witnessed in modern history.  Continued deficient spending and growth of the Federal Government to support social justice at the expense of the free market and eventually individual freedom. Or perhaps another event might be millions of people protesting in the street in America because their handouts no longer can be sustained.   Simply put “there is no such thing as a free lunch.”  When the Government runs out of other people’s money to spend we will become Greece and that’s when the real revolution will begin.  God Help the United States of America should we ever reach that time.

The Miracle of Obama’s Arithmetic!

By: Richard H. Frank

Barack Obama uses the phrase “it’s arithmetic” to prove his criticism of his opponent’s revenue and tax policies. Yet when it comes to calculation of the unemployment rate in America the rule that 2+2=4 doesn’t apply. There should be no doubt in the mind of any informed American that the real unemployment rate in this country is substantially higher than that reported in the Department of Labor’s monthly statistics. Consider the following:

  • According to the Government between 150,000 and 175,000 new jobs are needed each month just to keep pace with population growth. Their own statistics show that this has not happened over the past year. Yet, the rate has dropped from 9.3% to the September bogus number of 7.8%.
  • Weekly first time claims for unemployment benefits remain above 350,000 or a total of approximately 1.0 million per month which is 4 to 5 times the number of new private sector jobs reported as created by the Department of Labor. Yet, the administration and the President takes credit for 5 million new jobs created in just the past 10-month period. These facts just don’t add up.
  • More importantly the Obama Administrations own figures show that the U-6 under-employment rate remains locked in at 14.1%. This is a direct contradiction to their reported 7.8% for September 2012.
  • The most startling and bogus number in all the calculations used by the administration is the available workforce in the country which has  magically fallen by more than 8 million persons. Where have all these people gone? Have they migrated to Mexico in search of employment crossing the border in the dead of night to become illegal immigrants?

The real answer is that “it’s all about politics and electing  Barack Obama for a second term”. We find ourselves living under an administration headed by a President that will do and say anything to be re-elected. The media dare not call out the administration for the lies and distortions they spew to the American public for fear of being labeled as racist. I for one could care less about the color of the President’s skin, but do care about the color of his character.

President Obama and his administration have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of transparency and a propensity to manipulate the truth to the point of lacking any credibility with the electorate. This was not the “Hope and Change” that many Americans voted for in 2008. Now in 2012 it is time to make a change and replace Obama and his administration with qualified men that have the values and principles that have made America exceptional.

J. Christopher Stevens’ Murder – “Just a Bump in the Road!”

By Richard H. Frank

Once again, Barack Obama has shown his true colors proclaiming on “60 Minutes” that the “criminal” assault on the Libyan Consulate that resulted in the assassination of Ambassador Stevens was just a “bump in the road” along the path to achieving democracy in the Middle East.  A President that ignores the obvious fact that the attack was a coordinated terrorist assault upon the United States on the anniversary of 9/11 is either living in some alternative universe or is just plain perpetrating a lie in order to shift responsibility for his lack of leadership and failed policies to some obscure video that allegedly insults the Prophet Mohammed.

Then on Tuesday September 25, the President addressed the UN General Assembly and used the biography of Ambassador Stevens as the introduction to his remarks leading to placing the blame for Mid-East violence against our interests on the video, asserting our Government had nothing to do with the production.

Barack Obama, the Narcissist-in-Chief, ignores his responsibility to meet with leaders of the world but takes time to appear on The View where he proclaimed his presence to be “eye candy” for the show.  Does this man have any respect for the dignity of the Office he holds?  I think it is time we judge Barack Obama not by his words alone, but by his actions, or lack of action.

Three and one-half years after assuming the Office, we are witnessing Obama’s “fundamental change” in America.  Chronic unemployment, record foreclosures, 8.2% drop in household income and a loss of 40% in the net worth of the average American.

Yet Obama continues to champion deficit spending and trillion-dollar increases in the National Debt in the name of “fairness” to correct a stagnant economy for which he assumes no responsibility.

As to his dismal record, he and  his supporters have only one response.  That response is to blame George W. Bush.  Somehow, I cannot find George W. Bush on the ballot anywhere in America and think it is time for the Democrats to run on their own record.

Given the reality of domestic and foreign policy today under Barack Obama, it is unbelievable that he would lead Mitt Romney in any poll concerning the 2012 Presidential election.

Should you believe the murders of J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans are “just a bump in the road” resulting from Obama’s foreign policy, I hope we never hit a pothole along that road.  That “pothole” is coming into focus in the form of Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon and having to take sides with Israel to prevent their ultimate achievement of that goal.  What will Obama do when Israel takes the initiative to protect their people from a country that has sworn to wipe them off the face of the earth.  I’m sure he will find a way to spin the situation and place the blame directly at the feet once again of George W. Bush.

The time has come to fire Obama and return this Country to the path of assuring respect for the principles and values that have made America the greatest Country in the history of the World.

Who Do You Trust?

by Richard H. Frank

Today the Labor Department reported the unemployment rate in the U.S. dropped to 8.3% due to the creation of 240,000 jobs during the month of January.  The talking heads on television are ecstatic about this development and Obama’s policies finally resulting in job creation.  I just don’t understand the math when the same Government agency has reported over 350,000 first-time claims for unemployment each week over the same time period.  If my multiplication skills are correct, the first-time claims equal 1,400,000 job losses over the same period.  In order for the private sector to have had a net gain of 240,000 jobs in January, a total of 1,640,000 jobs would have to have been generated during the month. That rate equates to more than 19 million jobs per year outpacing the record set during the Reagan administration. Not likely!

There also seems to be some sleight of hand present when it comes to calculations for the unemployment rate.  When the trend is unfavorable to Obama politically, the base number for the workforce is adjusted downward making the percentage look better.  However, as people re-enter the workforce there appears to be no adjustment to the base again making the percentage look better, and a trend line favoring Obama’s policies.

The real measures for recovery are quite different from the Government manipulated numbers.  The economy can hardly be touted as being on the rebound when:

  • The annual growth in GDP is less than 2%.  Historical recovery growth ranges between 5 and 7% annually.
  • The annual budget deficit is running at a rate of $1 trillion/year with the debt ceiling now set at $16.2 trillion.
  • Unemployment benefits of 99 weeks are about to expire and a further extension is expected.

Even the Congressional Budget Office has a more realistic view of the recovery over the long term and is forecasting tepid growth in the GDP of around 2% per year and unemployment increasing to between 9 and 10% by 2013.

So long as the Obama Administration stubbornly clings to its anti-oil policy and anti-coal policy and pushes for redistribution of wealth in America we will see our standard of living continue to erode and see America  join Europe as a nation in decline.

Look around your community and ask yourself where the growth is and who do you know that has been hired in a good-paying  job with the prospect of long-term employment.  Ask yourself “Have my personal finances improved or am I paying more today for gasoline, energy, food and health care?”

Lastly, and more importantly, are you better off today than before the Obama presidency and what is the future prospect for your children achieving a better standard of living.

Trust yourself and not those having a political agenda and the answer will become quite clear.

Obama’s State of the Union Speech More Appropriate for February 2 (Groundhog Day)!

by Richard H. Frank

Prior to the President’s address to a joint session to Congress and the Nation on the State of the Union, I reviewed my blog following last year’s speech entitled “Reality vs. Campaign Rhetoric.”

I fear, as in the movie ‘Groundhog Day” we are destined to relive his speech over and over again until he gets it right or until the electorate gets it right and votes Obama out of office.

The true measure of the “State of the Union” is outlined in last year’s blog and if anything has changed since then, the change has been for the worse.  I expect the Obama speechwriters labored tirelessly to find some undistorted facts for him to claim as his accomplishments.  Obama lives in a different universe than does the rest of America.  Unfortunately, Congress shares much of that same universe as Obama and is willing to accept the myths he spreads as accomplishments.  Half truths are obvious throughout his 65-minute performance to convince America that he deserves 4 more years as President.  Consider these statements compared to the facts:

  • Three million jobs have been created over the past 22 months.  According to the Administration’s own labor statistics, 1.7 million jobs have been lost over the same period since he was sworn into office.
  • His Administration saved the auto industry and GM is once again the world’s #1 producer of automobiles.  The truth remains that last year GM sold an estimated 9 million vehicles worldwide, a number that includes sales of manufacturers in which GM holds minority investments such as in China.  Volkswagan and Toyoto would be the first to challenge Obama’s claim as holding the sales title should their numbers include figures from Scania and truck makers like Man.  As for Toyota, their 2011 sales haven’t been reported for the full year and their estimate is that sales will be down by 7.9 million units as a result of the natural disasters and tsunami experienced in Japan and Thailand.  Should  Toyoto include Wuling sales they will outperform the new GM. As with the employment figures in the U.S., if the numbers don’t support your position, just change the base until they do.
  • “What’s happening in  Detroit can happen elsewhere!”  May God forbid this will come to pass.  Detroit has been transformed into a ghetto as the result of liberal, Progressive, Democrat Government over four decades.  This once proud city with a population making it the 4th largest in the nation in the past has degraded into a wasteland and now occupies 18th position in the nation.  The intercity population has fallen to under 800,000 and is surrounded by decay and a failing infrastructure, and vacant buildings and home line the city’s neighborhoods and provide a magnet for crime.  This area has a 28% unemployment rate under Obama.  Once known as the “Motor City” and the “Capital of Democracy”, it acquired the title of “Murder City” in the 1980s and has continued its rapid degradation since then.  If Detroit provides Obama’s vision for this nation, something is radically wrong with our President’s vision.
  • “Oil production in  America is the highest it has been in 8 years.”  I recall reading an article indicating this increase amounts to less than 2 million barrels a day.   The existing capacity to produce is somewhere between 10 to 20 million barrels per day if it were not for the onerous Government Regulations stifling production.

His statement that he has directed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to purchase eco biofuel for the Navy once again provides a subsidy to an industry that cannot compete in the free market environment.  Official estimates are that this biodiesel will cost the American taxpayers up to 38% more than diesel fuel derived from crude oil.

Since our President has virtually no record of accomplishment to base his campaign for reelection upon, he must resort to tactics that attack Congress, demonize his Republican opponents and avoid at all costs a debate on “Obamacare.”

His tactics were evident with his every utterance last night:

  • His subtle accusation that Congress is not doings its job in comparison to our military completing its mission in Iraq and Afghanistan shifts the blame to others for his lack of leadership.
  • Stating that every American must do and pay their fair share and play by the same rules is pure class warfare and anti-capitalism.
  • His statement that over the past decade, the rich have benefitted and the poor have suffered due to a tax structure having rates that favor the rich is a distortion of the truth and blatantly false.  An individual having $1 million earnings from investment pays tax at a rate of 15% or $150,000 on those capital gains.  This is over and above the original 25-36% they paid on their investment when taxed as wages.  That amounted to between $250,000 and  $360,000 paid in taxes on those investment dollars.  When Obama compares the total $400,000 to $510,000 paid n investment income to Warren Buffet’s secretary paying 28% on $50,000 income, or $5600, the distortion becomes ridiculous and not worthy of our President.
  • Following his pledge to open 75% of Federal lands and offshore regions for energy production, he qualified the promise by stating he would not walk away from his promise of clean energy and development fo safe energy.  He avoided any mention of the Keystone XL pipeline in his remarks and took refuge behind the “BP horizon” incident in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • In one breath he advocated smaller Government and less regulation when in the next he advocated appointment by executive fiat three new agencies composed of a “trade enforcement unit,” “executive order to remove red tape for infrastructure projects ” and creation of a special unit in the Justice Department to investigate financial crime, sounds  like growing the Government and more regulation to me.
  • His call for “comprehensive immigration reform” came against a statement that our southern borders are safer and more secure than ever.  A claim heavily disputed by Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.  Although not mentioned by name, his proposed reform smacked with elements of the “Dream Act” or amnesty for the children of illegals presently here in America.

The only positive to be found following the President’s address was the focus groups composed of Republicans, Democrats and Independents are no longer swallowing Obama’s rhetoric.

During the 2010 mid-term election “We the People” made our voices heard loud and clear.  Returning to the principles embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the limits of government defined in our Constitution is imperative in this Republic is to survive while individual freedom to prosper is the opportunity provided for every American.

When two-thirds of Americans believe this country is on the “wrong course” under the Obama Administration, it is their duty in the upcoming 2012 election to change course by removing that Administration and replace it with individuals dedicated to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
