Obama’s Case of Foot in Mouth!

By: Richard H. Frank

In an effort to appear tough during his campaign for re-election in 2012, the President declared that the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Assad forces would cross a “red Line” and be a game changer thereby changing his assessment of U. S. involvement in the conflict. That statement was made on August 20, 2012. One year later, August 21, 2013, chemical weapons were used against civilians in Syria. This action was reportedly the third such incident since the President’s declaration a year earlier when his “red line” was established.

True to the Obama form the first two incidents were brushed aside under the guise of having to confirm conclusive evidence of who was responsible and who to hold accountable in the event the allegations were found to be true. Now, the latest incident leaves Obama stranded in a corner trapped by his own words with regard to what actions he will take.

His efforts to form a coalition of willing nations to support him has all but vanished with Britain’s House of Commons vote not to support the United States in any punitive actions against the Assad regime. As for France, don’t hold your breath waiting for any help from them.

Obama can no longer forestall action as he has in Benghazi where he pledged to find those responsible for the September 11, 2012 attack on our consulate and the death of 4 Americans. Nothing has been done to date to bring those responsible to justice.

Instead, like a cornered rodent, Obama has defiantly pledged to strike Syria’s military assets to punish the Assad regime for the chemical attack upon its own civilian population. He assumes that his righteous posture to defend against those forces that endeavour to go against the norms established for the prohibition of the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances will justify his actions. He contends that the use of these weapons poses a threat to the security and interests of the United States and that he alone as “Commander-in-Chief” possesses the authority to initiate action without the approval of Congress or with sanction from the United Nations.

Publicly he appears as the defender of the weak and helpless in an effort to bolster his falling approval ratings among Americans. Internationally he is viewed as the “Mouse that Roared” as evidenced by his failure to garner any support in coalition of the proposed undertaking against Syria.

On Saturday August 31,2013 he stood before the Nation and declared he had decided to strike against Syria; however, he also took a second decision to seek Congressional approval for his proposed actions. This will serve to give him a shield against his critics for having shot off his big mouth in August of 2012 just prior to the Presidential election declaring a “red Line” which Syria must not cross.

Should Congress vote against his proposed action he will contend they will have to bear the responsibility for any further deaths in Syria and any political consequences for their decision. Conversely, should they approve his plan it will give him cover and bolster him politically with his supporters yet providing him with someone else to blame for any unforseen consequences stemming from his action.

The situation in Syria has been allowed to fester beyond the point where any remedial action taken by outside forces other than the Arab States will have any impact upon the civil war being waged there.

When “We the People elect an unqualified, inexperienced President such as Barack Obama to hold office we open the door to the unforseen consequences that are certain to follow. Obama has shown that he will never accept responsibility for any of his policies or actions when they fail, but will always shift the blame to another person or entity for failure. Remember with Obama everything is ultimately about Obama. The “Narcissist-in-Chief” has taken the stage repeatedly and lied to the American people and to date has not been held responsible for his lies and actions.

Now is the time for Congress to assert their power over the Executive Branch of Government and hold the President to the enumerated powers set forth in the Constitution before he is allowed to place our military in harm’s way.

Contact your Congressional Representatives and insist that they vote against Obama for taking any action as he has failed to show how the Nation’s security and interests are being threatened by the civil war in Syria.
